Environmental solutions from the forests of Finland

Iceland’s quest to find innovative new food packaging to replace plastic has taken its packaging experts to the heart of the Finnish forest.

MD Richard Walker accompanied the team to see the production of environmentally friendly ready meal trays at first hand. Made from renewable resources and recyclable, paperboard trays make an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic or foil trays.

The trees used in the production process come from forests that are managed sustainably, with four trees being planted for each one that it cut down. In this way new generations of trees replace those that are logged, absorbing more CO2 from the atmosphere.

Iceland is replacing the 100 million black CPET plastic trays a year used across its entire own label and exclusive ready meal ranges with more sustainable alternatives.
