Iceland launches optional receipts

September 21, 2019

Iceland has made receipt printing optional across all of its stores, giving customers the choice to decline a paper receipt and helping to reduce paper consumption.

In the first week of going live, 53% of customers declined to take a paper receipt. This is expected to save 210,000 till rolls per year, which would stretch 21,000km – more than half the distance around the world. The initiative will save 76.65 tonnes of paper per year, equating to 1,839 trees being saved yearly.
