Raising awareness of sepsis

January 7, 2019

Sepsis is a serious complication of routine infections that can cause multiple organ failure and death if it is not treated quickly, and it affects more than 250,000 people in the UK every year.

In January 2019 the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation (IFCF) announced that it had formed a new partnership with the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST) to raise public awareness of this life-threatening illness, provide support for those affected by it, educate healthcare professionals, and encourage political change.

IFCF will be an official partner of the new Schools Against Sepsis campaign, launching in North West England in March 2019, which will help to deliver lesson plans to students and information cards for them to take home to share with their families. UKST will also work with Iceland to educate our 25,000 employees about sepsis and the symptoms to look out for to ensure that it can be treated in time to save a life.

Iceland has committed to include information about sepsis and how to spot its symptoms on its own label milk bottles; these have the potential to reach millions of customers, and so help to make more people aware of the dangers of sepsis than ever before.

Dr Ron Daniels, CEO of the UK Sepsis Trust commented on the announcement: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the IFCF, who will be instrumental in the launch of our Schools Against Sepsis campaign in the North West. Their vital support will enable us to educate children in schools and give them the tools to safeguard themselves and even their siblings and parents. Working with IFCF will help us raise even more awareness, on an unprecedented scale, and bring us closer to achieving our goal of ending preventable deaths by sepsis and saving 14,000 lives every year.”
