Food you can trust

As long ago as the 1980s, Iceland became the first UK supermarket to remove artificial colours, flavourings and non-essential preservatives, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) from our own label foods.

We banned mechanically recovered meat from all Iceland own label foods in 1990, and in 1998 we became the first national food retailer anywhere in the world to ban genetically modified ingredients – a commitment which every other major UK food retailer then followed. We were the first supermarket to ban the use of artificial colours in hen feed in 1999 and we removed artificial trans fats from all Iceland own label foods in 2006.

In 2018 we announced a five year plan to remove plastic packaging from our own label foods, and to remove palm oil as an ingredient – a move intended to raise awareness of deforestation and to give customers a choice.
