A fair deal

Iceland is a great place to work – and you don’t have to take our word for that

It is a fact independently confirmed by the annual Sunday Times Best Companies survey, which has ranked Iceland among the Best Big Companies To Work For in the UK every year for the last thirteen years and has twice awarded us the Number One spot, in 2012 and 2014.

Iceland has maintained its position at Number 8 on The Sunday Times 25 Best Big Companies to Work For list 2019 and is the only food retailer to appear in the top 25.

Our pay

Iceland was ranked Number One for giving our staff a Fair Deal in the Best Big Companies to Work For survey in 2019 with 66% of colleagues agreeing that they receive a Fair Deal.

We review our colleagues’ pay every year, twice last year, to ensure that the business remains competitive, and unlike many other retailers, we pay all our frontline colleagues the same hourly rate, no matter their age or length of service. Iceland has been ranked Number One in the Sunday Times Best Companies survey for giving our staff a Fair Deal for the last seven years.

Gender pay gap

According to the Office of National Statistics, the overall UK mean gender pay gap is 17.9%. We are therefore encouraged that our gender pay gap is significantly below the national average, with Iceland’s mean gender pay gap standing at 13.5% with the median gender pay standing at 11.8%.

Maternity/paternity pay

We offer enhanced and competitive maternity and paternity leave policies to support mums and dads at the time they need it most. Colleagues are entitled to 14 week’s full pay and 25 week’s statutory maternity pay (SSP) during their maternity leave. Expectant fathers are offered 1 week’s full pay and 1 week’s statutory paternity pay (SSP) for paternity leave.

Recent improvements in this offer were a direct response to challenges from Talking Shop and Deeside Voice.

There are more than just a few perks about working at Iceland

Perks of the job

Our benefits hub, Iceland Spend & Save, offers all Iceland colleagues discounts at over 150 retailers, plus cashback on shopping, holidays, insurance and more. Colleagues can also take advantage of discounted car leasing with Arnold Clark, and low-cost loans or market-beating savings rates with credit union, retailCURe.

Presided over by Michelin-starred restaurant chef Mike Truelove since 2005, the Roxy at Iceland head office is simply one of the best staff restaurants anywhere. It offers a mouth-watering daily selection of at least two different hot dishes and freshly griddled fish, plus cooked to order pasta and a well-stocked salad bar. The prices, too, are truly exceptional, with the heavily subsidised lunch costing £2.00 – 3.50 for a main course, including a wide choice of vegetables or salads to accompany it. Healthy menu options are always available and fresh fruit is provided free of charge. The Roxy also serves breakfast and includes a subsidised all-day Costa Coffee bar.

Staff discount

As a food retailer, we are passionate about the food we sell in our stores and we encourage our colleagues to enjoy our food and recommend it to family, friends and customers.

All Iceland colleagues receive 10% off their shopping at all of our Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores in the UK. Twice a year, the company holds Double Discount Weeks when colleagues can take advantage of 20% off their shopping in our stores.

Christmas vouchers

Every Christmas, our Executive Chairman Sir Malcolm Walker rewards every colleague, who has worked at Iceland for six months or more, with Christmas vouchers and a personalised Christmas card.

The value of the vouchers increases with colleagues’ length of service up to a value of £50, rewarding them for their commitment to the business and to take pressure off affording treats during Christmas time.
