Iceland opens its doors early for elderly and vulnerable customers
March 17, 2020Around 100 Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores will open their doors early this week, with dedicated shopping hours for elderly and vulnerable customers amid widespread concerns about their access to food during the country’s COVID-19 pandemic. The move was inspired by Belfast Senior Supervisor, Paul McTasney who convinced Store Manager, Danny Burke, to open his store in the Kennedy Shopping Centre at 8am on Tuesday 16th March to allow elderly and vulnerable customers to shop at a quieter time.
Iceland, as well as many other supermarkets, has been impacted by increased stockpiling behaviour, with customers buying bigger volumes of frozen food, canned and dry goods, toilet paper and cleaning products, despite reassurance from across the grocery sector that there is no shortage in supply.
Store Managers in all Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores have been encouraged to take action in their own communities, by hosting dedicated shopping hours to their most vulnerable customers if it is appropriate and safe for their teams to do so.
